Hiking Mount Rainier National Park
Mount Rainier National Park is the most popular park in the state. It has fantastic areas to explore. The Mountain is a popular challenge for people wishing to scale the peak. The park also has 240 miles of trails and is a super place to visit. Established in 1899. 235,625 acres (97% is designated Wilderness). Includes Mount Rainier (14,410'), an active volcano encased in over 35 square miles of snow and ice. The park contains outstanding examples of old growth forests and subalpine meadows. Mount Rainier National Park offers excellent opportunities for scenic drives, hiking, and mountain climbing. Most roads are open from late May to early October--all provide
stunning views and access to a variety of hiking trails and other sites. Lots of campgrounds, great drives through the area and plenty of places to stay the night. You can stay at the Lodges in the park or just outside in one of the entrance towns. It will be crowded on the weekends, so be prepared. Entering from the Southwest Nisqually entrance, it is a great drive up to Paradise. You will pass Sunshine Point(camping,picnic) and then Kautz Creek Trailhead. Very nice trail up towards Mount Ararat(6010') and Indian Henrys Hunting Ground(Views are great). As you continue up the Main road you will reach Longmire(lodging, museum, Info Center and dining). There is a short Trail of the Shadows as well as Rampart Ridge
trailhead(good trail). After Longmire you drive on to Cougar Rock campground. Continue higher up to Christine Falls and on up to Paradise. Paradise is the main visitors area with many short trails through meadows right at the base of the Mountain. (Visitor
center, lodging, dining) Past Paradise you will find the road continue through the park towards Sunrise in the Northeast section of the park. Past forest, meadows, lakes, and streams. Box Canyon is a nice hike. You pass Cougar Falls and head south around Backbone Ridge, then back north through the Stevens Canyon Entrance. Grove of the Patriarchs trail is a great hike through some old growth forest. Heading north the road goes past the Shriner Peak Lookout Trailhead. Up to Cayuse pass and down to the White River Entrance. White River has camping and some good trails to explore. If you continue on to the Sunrise visitor center you will find some outstanding views and quite a few trails to sample. At less then 2 hours drive from Seattle it makes a perfect getaway. What artifacts might remain in this time capsule, mute testimony to an era when grizzled men moved tons of rock in pursuit of their dreams? Such is the poetic, romance-novel appeal that might induce you to take leave of your senses and crawl into an old mine. Thousands of such small openings are scattered throughout the country. Although most common in the historically "hard rock" Western mining states, they can also be found in the old lead and copper districts of the Midwest. In reality, multiple dangers lurk beyond the pale ring of light that filters through the adit mouth.
Discover Eaton Canyon In Pasadena California
Eaton Canyon Natural Area Nature Center, entrance, 1750 N. Altadena Drive, Pasadena, Ca. 91107, is a 190-acre natural park is located at the base of Mt. Wilson. There are five miles of nature trails, an equestrian trail, creeks and a waterfall. The canyon is very lush and has beautiful displays of local flora and fauna. The park is open daily sunrise to sunset.
The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation supervises and maintains this "zoological, botanical, and geological wonderland situated at the base of the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains. With its hiking trails, wildlife, rocks and minerals, and plants, there is something for everyone to enjoy". At the entrance to the park you will find a 7,600 square-foot building containing many "fascinating displays, live animals, offices, classrooms, an auditorium, restrooms, and an information desk/gift shop". The Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, during which time a staff member is present to assist you. Both docent-guided and self-guided tours are available in Eaton Canyon. Reservations are required for either type in order to ensure that everyone has a pleasant experience.
One of the best places to visit in the park is the Eaton Canyon Waterfalls. According to Eaton Canyon Nature Center Associates "For a spectacular view of Eaton Canyon, hike to the 50-foot Eaton Canyon Waterfall". "There is water at the falls year-round, but in dry seasons and during the summer months the stream bed may be partially or totally dry. In order to reach the falls you'll have to cross the stream bed several times, but only in the wettest months will this be particularly difficult".
Camping is available by permit at Henninger Flats, rest rooms, drinking fountain, picnic area, a Visitor's Center and a plant nursery are located in the flats. No permit is needed to picnic or use the facilities.
Over fifty (50) species of plants, twenty (20) types of mammals, including mule deer, bobcats, coyote, fox and mountain lion, over one hundred fifty (150) species of birds, including hawks, vultures, owls, heron, pelican and eagles as well as numerous reptiles, amphibians and fish are found in the park.
